UNGA anti-Syria resolution a gift to terrorists: Iran envoy

Tehran, Nov 20, IRNA A senior Iranian diplomat in the United Nations Organization said a recent General Assembly anti-Syria resolution was a gift to terrorists and extremists.

Irans Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Gholam-Hossein Dehqani said the non-binding resolution ratified on Thursday on the human rights situation in Syria was a blow to the image of the world body.

He criticized the Saudi-sponsored resolution which disregarded the roots of crisis in Syria and said that Iran's defense staff in Syria are only on a consultation mission following the official call for assistance by the Syrian government.

'Such allegations are taking revenge from the forces who have had the most effective role in the fight against terrorism,' he added, 'Without their contribution, more areas could have been under Daesh's black flag.'

He said the resolution mars the dividing line between terrorism and anti-terrorism fighters. 'It intoxicates the atmosphere of (Vienna peace talks) and destroys the prospects for reaching an agreement.'

Dehqani said adoption of similar resolutions was the outcome of UN's weak human rights mechanisms which provide the opportunity to the countries against toleration to misuse such loopholes.

'The resolution and similar acts will not prevent Iran from fighting against extremist terrorism and cleansing the region from those who sow seeds of terror in Iran's neighborhood and export it to the world,' the envoy stressed.
