Who seeks seat in Iran's forthcoming Assembly of Experts election?

Tehran, December 21, The Iran Project- As the official registration of candidates for the fifth Assembly of Experts election started nationwide on Thursday, the nomination of candidates from various political circles motivates and energizes the public to have massive presence in the upcoming election in February.

While the week-long registration of candidates to the 88-seat Experts Assembly opened Thursday, Mohammad Hossein Moghimi, the head of Iran's election office, said so far some 236 have registered as candidates for the elections, four of which are female nominees.

On the fifth day of the registration, President Hassan Rouhani went the interior ministry and registered his candidacy. Rouhanis nomination for the Assembly of Experts is not his first. He has served in it twice as a representative of the cities of Semnan and Tehran.

To the analysts, the next elections competitions heats up when figures with rather distinctive political views have registered to run since the beginning of the registration process.

Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati, Mohammad Yazdi, Ahmad Khatami, Mohammad Taghi Mesbah Yazdi are considered the leading principalist and conservative figures registered in past days.

The candidature of Hassan Khomeini, the 43-year-old grandson of the late founder of the Islamic Revolution, Imam Khomeini, also has drawn a lot of attention in the first day of registration on Thursday.

Moreover, Irans former president,Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, the current assembly member and the head of the Expediency Council, has run for the assembly of experts' election on Monday evening, as well.

Ayatollah Mousavi Bojnourdi, Mahmoud Amjad and Mohammad Ali Taskhiri are other prominent figures who attended the Interior Ministry and registered for the assembly's election.

Potential candidates can register until December 23 and the Parliament and Assembly of Experts elections will be simultaneously held on February 26, 2016 across the country.
