The UN special envoy to Syria headed off to Saudi Arabia and Iran on Monday for talks to diffuse tensions between the two countries.
The United Nations special envoy forSyria traveled toSaudi Arabia onMonday, fromwhere he will head toIran fortalks withthe countries' leaders, the UN spokesman said onMonday.
Saudi Arabia's execution ofa prominent Shia cleric led toviolent protests atthe Saudi embassy inTehran, which led toa breakdown ofrelations betweenthe two countries. The UN envoy forYemen also intends totravel tothe two countries, according tothe spokesman.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon had phone calls withboth countries' foreign ministers inan effort todiffuse tensions.
"The Secretary-General reiterated that the attack onthe Saudi embassy inTehran was deplorable, butadded that the announcement ofa break inSaudi diplomatic relations withTehran was deeply worrying," UN spokesman spokesman Stephane Dujarric said ata press briefing.
"The Secretary-General urged both Foreign Ministers toavoid any actions that could further exacerbate the situation betweentwo countries and inthe region asa whole. He stressed the importance ofcontinued constructive engagement byboth countries inthe interest ofthe region and beyond," a statement fromthe Secretary-General's office said.
The spokesman added that there are currently no plans forUN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon tovisit the region, although he is concerned aboutthe situation.
Saudi Arabia previously cut air traffic withIran, and said that it intends tocut all commercial ties. Saudi allies inthe region followed inbreaking diplomatic relations or reducing embassy staff. Bahrain said that it does not intend tocompletely break offrelations.
