Iran interested in trading with Russia in national currencies

Iran's Ambassador to Russia Mehdi Sanaei said that Iran is interested in strengthening the economic and banking cooperation with Russia and opening joint banks for mutual payments in rubles and rials.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) Tehran is interested inincreasing economic cooperation withMoscow afterthe anti-Iran sanctions are lifted, including transitioning totrade innational currencies, Ambassador toRussia Mehdi Sanaei said Monday.
"Iran is interested instrengthening the economic and banking cooperation withRussia and opening joint banks formutual payments inrubles and rials," Sanaei wrote inhis livejournal blog.


On Saturday, the European Union, the United States and the United Nations lifted sanctions targeting Iran afterthe International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) verified Tehrans compliance witha nuclear agreement reached inJuly 2015.

In December 2015, Russian Industry and Trade Minister Denis Manturov said Russia and Iran were likely tostart transactions innational currencies, adding that the trade turnover betweenthe two countries was estimated ataround $5 billion infive years.

Sanaei said earlier this month that the two countries planned tocreate a joint account fornational currency trade.
