France, Germany cannot solve refugee crisis alone Italian PM

Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi called on the international community to increase financial support to the UN refugee agency, as well as cooperate with conflict-torn countries, such as Lebanon, Jordan, Somalia and Ethiopia.

BERLIN (Sputnik) German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande cannot solve a massive refugee crisis in the European Union by taking decisions for all members in the bloc, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said Thursday.

"If we're looking for a joint European strategy to solve the refugee question, it can't be sufficient for Angela to first call Hollande and then EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, and that I learn of the result in the press," Renzi told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper ahead of his Friday meeting with the German chancellor in Berlin.

The Italian high-ranking official also called on the international community to increase financial support to the UN refugee agency, as well as cooperate with conflict-torn countries, such as Lebanon, Jordan, Somalia and Ethiopia.

Europe is currently struggling to cope with a massive refugee influx, with millions of refugees fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East and North Africa in search of asylum in stable and wealthy EU states.
