Belgium seeks talks with Iran on Syria, refugees

TEHRAN (FNA)- Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel in a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif called for continued talks on regional issues, including Syria and refugees.

"Belgium attaches great importance to bilateral relations with Iran and seeks consultations and negotiations on regional topics, including Syria, the refugee crisis, and their impacts on Europe," Michel said in Brussels on Tuesday.

He further spoke of the importance of investment by his country's private sector in Iran, adding that "we want to establish direct flights between Tehran and Brussels."

Zarif, for his part, said the two sides have what it takes to broaden cooperation in energy, industry, and technology.

As for the region, he said "the positions of certain regional states are exacerbating the ongoing crisis in Syria."

In relevant remarks in November, Michel had called for formation of an international anti-ISIL coalition including Iran.

"We are advocating a wide international coalition, preferably, within the UN framework, as we are convinced that a political dialog between Europe, the United States, Russia and Iran is necessary and urgent," Charles Michel said, speaking before the deputies of the lower chamber of the Belgian parliament.

Michel reiterated that it was necessary to boost international efforts to eliminate the terrorist group of ISIL.
