Washington’s strategic mistakes have troubled European allies: Iranian MP

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior Iranian lawmaker said the recent wave of terrorism in some European allies of the US has its roots in Washington’s strategic mistakes in the Middle East, particularly in war-stricken Syria.

Speaking at a meeting with Chairman of the Finnish Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee Antti Samuli Kaikkonen in Tehran on Sunday, Chairman of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi described the ongoing crisis in Syria as a result of mistakes made by the US government.

“The United States’ strategic mistake that was due to incorrect analysis of information provided by its regional allies led it to deploy its forces, supply arms to and train tens of thousands of terrorists in the region,” he said.

The prominent lawmaker added that terrorist acts by those very groups have cost some European countries dearly.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh, currently controlling parts of it.

Daesh (also known as ISIL), as a Takfiri group in Iraq and Syria, is believed to be supported by the West and some regional Arab countries.

According to a new report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.
