Irans Assembly of Experts to pick new chairman this month

TEHRAN (Tasnim) Following the Assembly of Experts election held across Iran back in February, the high-ranking body will elect a new chairman later this month.

Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami, a member of the assembly who was reelected in the February votes, told Tasnim that the first official session of the 5th Assembly of Experts will be held on May 24.

He added that during the session, new chairman and members of the presiding board will be elected.

The Assembly of Experts elects and oversees the activities of the leader of the Islamic Revolution.

Members of the assembly are directly elected to office by people for an eight-year term. It holds biannual meetings to appoint a new chairman.

161 candidates ran for the 88-seat assembly.

More than 60 percent of some 55 million eligible voters cast their ballots at around 53,000 polling stations across the country on that day.
