Iran para-taekwondo team crowned in Africa championships


National Iranian mens para-taekwondoteamhasexhibited awe-inspiring displays at the first edition of AfricanPara TaekwondoChampionships in Egypt, and been crowned as the champion of theinternational sporting event.

On Sunday, Iran stood on top of the podium with a total of eight (five gold, two silver and one bronze) medals, having racked up 42 points.

Morocco finished in the second place with nine medals (three golds, one silver and five bronzes) and 29 points.

Spain also snatched nine (three gold, one silver and five bronze) medals, having collected 15 points to occupy the third spot.

Nigeria, Germany, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Ukraine, Lesotho, Comoros and Egypt landed in the fourth to the eleventh slot.

The first edition of AfricanPara TaekwondoChampionships started in Egypts northeastern coastal city of Port Said on May 22 and finished on the same day.

The event was open to participants from all around the world as part of theWorld Taekwondo Federations (WTFs) policy to provide para-taekwondo practitioners with regular access to world class competitions.

First-placed athletes from African countries, namely Comoros, Egypt, Lesotho, Morocco, Nigeria and Niger, earned G4 world ranking points equivalent to 40 points at the championships, while contestants from Afghanistan, Iran, Uzbekistan, Germany, Spain and Ukraine were awarded G2 world ranking points (20 points).

Afghanistan, Germany and Nigeria took part in apara-taekwondoevent for the first time.
