Iran, Sweden ink MoU on political consultation

TEHRAN (Tasnim) Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Swedish counterpart Margot Wallstrom discussed a range of issues at a meeting in Stockholm, and signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on periodic political consultations between the two countries foreign ministries.

The top Iranian diplomat arrived in Sweden on Tuesday night as part of his European tour, which took him earlier to Finland and Poland.

In the meeting on Wednesday morning, Zarif called for stronger cooperation between Tehran and Stockholm in all fields in the post-sanctions era. He also described Iranians residing in Sweden as cultural links between the two nations.

Wallstrom, for her part, congratulated Iran for clinching a win-win nuclear deal with world powers, and stressed the need for enhanced cooperation between Tehran and Stockholm given their age-old diplomatic relations.

The two ministers also discussed the latest developments in Western Asia and North Africa before signing the memorandum of understanding.

Earlier in the day, Zarif held separate meetings with Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven and Minister for Enterprise and Innovation Mikael Damberg, and also attended an Iran-Sweden mercantile conference.

Travelling with a 60-strong delegation of Iranian businessmen, Zarif is going to visit Latvia after Sweden.

The European tour comes against a backdrop of international enthusiasm for enhanced ties with Iran after Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) on July 14, 2015 reached the agreement on Irans peaceful nuclear program and started implementing it on January 16.
