TEHRAN -- Iranian parliamentary deputy speaker Mohammad Reza Bahonar has publicly announced his intention to run for president.
Bahonar's March 14 announcement comes after four other politicians said they would compete in the June 14 presidential election.
Former Foreign Minister Manuchehr Mottaki, Expediency Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei, another senior member of the council, Hassan Rohani, and former Intelligence Minister Ali Fallahian have also expressed their plans to stand as presidential candidates.
All the candidates will have to officially register with the Guardians Council between May 7 and May 11.
Incumbent Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad is finishing his second four-year term in office and is not eligible to take part because of a two-term limit on the presidency.
