Baku Summit to enrich Persian Gulf with Caspian Sea resources

Leaders of Russia, Iran and Azerbaijan met in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku to intensify their cooperation in the energy field. Political expert Sajjad Tayeri said that the meeting could be viewed as the first step toward a resolution of the problem with regard to transportation of energy resources produced in the Caspian Sea.

According toTayeri, the intention toreach an agreement onthe issue and enhance cooperation inthe Caspian Sea, demonstrated atthe recent summit inBaku, could resolve the problem oftransportation ofCaspian energy resources intothe waters ofthe Persian Gulf.
"From there, Asian countries which are indire need ofenergy resources, will be able, withoutany risks and hazards, tobuild further transit routes," the expert stated.

According toTayeri, the summit inBaku can be viewed asa historic event forall participants.

"At the meeting, parties discussed the issue ofthe Caspian Sea; the resolution ofits legal status, has unfortunately, been constantly postponed indefinitely'. Many countries are actively using the energy resources ofthe Caspian Sea. But, forexample, the Iranian share inthis strategic water basin has not yet been determined," the expert said.
"Many Caspian countries say that the Caspian Sea is a closed water body which doesn't have access tofree waters. But atthe same time, it is obvious that throughIranian territory it would be possible, sincethe Islamic Republic can connect the Caspian basin withthe Indian Ocean," Tayeri added.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia was ready todiscuss joint Caspian pipeline use withIran and Azerbaijan.

"Russia, Iran and Azerbaijan can discuss the implementation ofnew energy and transport projects inthe Caspian Sea We really have something totalk aboutin this format. There may be new projects inthe Caspian Sea, and ina broader context, I mean transportation, energy, and the diversification oftrade and economic relations," Putin said.

During the meeting, the three leaders also discussed a wide range ofpressing international issues, including Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, and multilateral cooperation, particularly intrade, banking, energy and transport.
