Verification, monitoring in Iran have just begun: IAEA’s Amano

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano said verification and monitoring activities in Iran have just started and would go on for many years.

"Last year, we provided a clear, factual assessment of Iran's past nuclear activities," Amano said in the 60th Regular Session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference in Vienna on Monday as cited by Big News Network.com.

"The work of the Agency was indispensable in paving the way for the diplomatic breakthrough achieved last year in the form of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). We are now verifying and monitoring Iran's implementation of its nuclear-related commitments under that agreement."

The IAEA could take pride in its achievements, but many challenges lay ahead, Amani said, adding that verification and monitoring in Iran had just begun and would continue for many years to come.

On September 19, the International Atomic Energy Agency once again confirmed Iran’s commitment to the JCPOA, the nuclear deal Tehran signed with the six world powers in July 2015.

“Iran continues to implement its nuclear-related commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action,” Amano said in an introductory statement to the agency’s Board of Governors in Vienna on September 19.

He added that his report on verification and monitoring in the Islamic Republic of Iran in light of United Nations Security Council resolution 2231 (2015) summarizes the verification and monitoring activities conducted by the UN nuclear agency in the last few months.

The IAEA chief said Iran has submitted its declarations under the Additional Protocol, which Tehran is applying provisionally, pending its entry into force.

“The Agency continues to verify the non-diversion of nuclear material declared by Iran under its Safeguards Agreement,” Amano stated.

Also in a quarterly report on Iran on September 8, the IAEA had confirmed Iran’s commitment to the nuclear agreement.
