US congress passes bill to extend Iran sanctions over next decade

Sputnik- House of Representatives speaker Paul Ryan said that the US Congress has passed a bill seeking to extend sanctions on Iran for another ten years.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) The US Congress has passed a bill seeking toextend sanctions onIran foranother ten years, House ofRepresentatives speaker Paul Ryan said ina statement. "Todays bipartisan vote will help maintain our ability toimmediately reinstate sanctions againstIran overthe next decade," Ryan stated onTuesday. House Committee onHomeland Security Chairman Michael McCaul said ina statement the Iran Sanctions Act (ISA), which was enacted some 20 years ago, is a core element ofthe US effort tocounter "Iranian aggression."

The congressman noted that the new bill "extends sanctions forten years onIrans illicit weapons programs and ballistic missile development that were not suspended aspart ofthe Obama administrations flawed nuclear deal."

In July 2015, Iran signed a historic deal withthe P5+1 group ofcountries, comprising the United States, Russia, China, France and the United Kingdom plus Germany, tomaintain a peaceful nature ofnuclear program inexchange forsanctions relief. Under the agreement, some sanctions, including embargoes ongas and oil trade, were lifted offIran inexchange forcompliance withsafety guidelines onTehran's nuclear program. The accord allowed Iran toresume its petroleum exports and implementation ofa number offrozen projects inthe sphere ofenergy.
