Pakistan welcomes Irans mediation call on Kashmir

IRNA Pakistan says it welcomes the statements of Iran regarding mediation on Kashmir dispute.

Responding to questions at the weekly news briefing in Islamabad, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nafees Zakaria said Pakistan has welcomed the statements of friendly countries like Iran and China and also those of the US President-elect Donald Trump and UN Secretary-General regarding mediation on Kashmir.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif earlier had said that Tehran is ready to mediate between India and Pakistan 'if asked by the two sides'.

Nafees Zakaria said that despite a number of gestures by Pakistan, India is not ready to resume the dialogue.

He said any dialogue with India should lead to ultimate resolution of the Kashmir dispute in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions.

He said Pakistan believes the international community has a role in the resolution of the longstanding dispute. He said Pakistan welcomes the latest statement of the US Vice President-elect Mike Pence regarding mediation on Kashmir.
