Russia, Turkey fulfill commitments on Syrian ceasefire - Turkish FM

Sputnik- According to the Turkish foreign minister, Russia and Turkey have fulfilled their obligations concerning the Syria truce.

ANKARA (Sputnik) Russia and Turkey have fulfilled their obligations concerning the ceasefire inSyria and the evacuation ofpeople fromAleppo, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said onSunday.

"In recent days, Russia has kept its promises onall efforts regarding the ceasefire, forhumanitarian aid, forsaving the people fromthere Turkey has also kept its promises [towards Russia]," Cavusoglu was quoted assaying bythe Anadolu news agency. On Tuesday, the foreign and defense ministers ofRussia, Iran and Turkey met inMoscow todiscuss the situation inSyria, including Aleppo.

The countries noted the importance ofextending the ceasefire, voicing their willingness tobecome guarantors ofthe forthcoming agreement betweenDamascus and the opposition. Since 2011, Syria has been engulfed ina civil war, followingthe protests that had turned violent, aspart ofthe so-called Arab Spring. Over the recent months, Aleppo became a major battleground inSyria.

On December 16, the Russian Defense Ministry's center forSyrian reconciliation said that the Syrian army operation toliberate the eastern neighborhoods ofAleppo was over, and that the Syrian government troops were eliminating separate hotbeds ofmilitant resistance.
