Turkey, Russia agree to submit Syria ceasefire proposal to Damascus for review

Sputnik- Russia-Turkey framework agreement on Syria proposes end of hostilities in the country starting at midnight local time on december 29. Moreover the two countries agreed that the deal should be submitted for considiration by Damascus, Turkish news agency reports.

Turkey and Russia have agreed onthe outlines ofa nationwide ceasefire plan inSyria forDamascus toconsider, Turkish media reported Wednesday.

The general ceasefire proposal is planned tobe presented tothe Syrian government forconsideration, according toTurkey's Anadolu news service.

On December 20, the Russian, Iranian and Turkish foreign ministers met inMoscow. They emphasized the importance ofexpanding the ceasefire regime inSyria and announced their willingness tobroker a future agreement betweenDamascus and the opposition.

Three days prior, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed the possibility ofholding talks betweenthe Syrian government and opposition inthe Kazakh capital of Astana. The Moscow-Ankara proposal is said totake effect atmidnight local time onThursday, December 29 (22:00 GMT Wednesday), the Anadolu news service said citing anonymous sources.

The truce agreement is subject toapproval bythe Syrian government and does not extend to terrorist organizations operating inthe country. Should the pact hold, according toAnadolu, the Syrian government and opposition will launch peace talks inthe Kazakh capital ofAstana brokered byRussia and Turkey. The bilateral proposal aims toadvance the political process outlined inthe UN resolution onSyria.
