UN welcomes first anniversary of Iran nuclear deal

Sputnik- United Nations welcomes the one-year anniversary since the beginning of the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, also known as the Iran nuclear deal, Deputy Spokesman for the Secretary-General Farhan Haq said at a UN press briefing on Monday.

UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) On July 14, 2015, the P5+1 group ofcountries reached the JCPOA toensure the peaceful nature ofIrans nuclear program inreturn forsanctions relief.

The agreement came intoforce onJanuary 16, 2016, afterthe International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) submitted a report confirming the readiness ofIran's authorities toimplement the program toreduce the countrys nuclear potential.

Iran ramped upboth oil production and investment inthe sector afterthe deal. "The United Nations welcomes the first anniversary ofthe achievement ofimplementation day underthe joint comprehensive plan ofaction (JCPOA) which marks a significant milestone inthe historic agreement," Haq said. According toHaq, the agreement plays a great role inensuring peaceful character ofIrans nuclear program. The UN encourages all member states tosupport the implementation ofJCPOA "in its entirety" and stresses it is important forthe agreement todeliver "tangible benefits tothe Iranian people".
