Sputnik- The UN Security Council acknowledged the importance of Astana talks on Syria and is looking forward to their resumption in Geneva, urging the Syrian sides to participate without preconditions, according to a Security Council statement.
UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) Representatives ofthe Syrian government and opposition factions met inAstana fortalks brokered byMoscow, Ankara and Tehran onJanuary 23-24.
"The members ofthe Security Council look forward tothe resumption ofintra-Syrian negotiations, encouraged inthe context the Secretary-Generals Special Envoy forSyria Mr. Staffan de Mistura toreconvene the negotiations assoon aspossible inGeneva and urged the Syrian parties toparticipate inthe negotiations ingood faith and withoutpreconditions," the statement said.
On Tuesday, UN Special Envoy forSyria Staffan de Mistura said that he asked the Security Council to postpone the intra-Syrian peace talks inGeneva the talks untilthe 20th ofFebruary. Initially the talks were slated forFebruary 8th.
De Mistura stressed that the Syrian government will have an opportunity toengage inserious discussions onthe issue and opposition groups, intheir turn, will be given a chance tocome tothe Geneva talks asone unified group.
