Iranian filmmaker to judge at Jean Rouch Filmfest.

MNA Iranian filmmaker Mehrdad Oskouei will judge at Jean Rouch International Film Festival in France.


The winner of Grand Prix Nanook for his documentary Starless Dreams at the 35th Jean Rouch International Film Festival in Paris, Mehrdad Oskouei is elected as a member of the international section jury at the French event.

He has made dozens of documentary films, including My Mothers Home, Lagoon, The Other Side of Burka, Maryam of Hengam Island, The Last Days of Winter and Starless Dreams.

Starless Dream narrates the lives of a group of young Iranian women who live together in a correctional and rehabilitation center for a variety of reasons ranging from drug dealing and trafficking, to pick-pocketing and manslaughter. Though bored with their incarcerated life, they are, nevertheless, scared about what might happen to them once outside. As the New Year approaches, they all hope to celebrate it with their families.

The Festival Jean Rouch, previously known as Bilan du FIlm Ethnographique, was created in March 1982 by anthropologist and filmmaker Jean Rouch. It aims at showcasing the most innovative and relevant trends in ethnographic film-making, visual anthropology, and to promote dialogue between cultures. The festival selects films that document and explore human societies and cultures in their many facets, such as social and cultural diversity, continuity and change, cultural transmission, relationship to the environment.
