Velayati: Under UN flag foreign intervention in Iraq could be deterred

IRNA Head of the Strategic Research Center at the Expediency Council Ali Akbar Velayati said on Sunday that under the UN flag it will be possible to help Iraqi people and prevent intervention of foreign forces in the country.

Valyati made the remarks in a meeting with visiting Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Iraq Jn Kubi.

In the meeting, the UN envoy called the need to fight against terrorist groups and their annihilation to help develop the country, he said.

Referring to years of dictatorship in Iraq and the invaluable experiences of the people from democracy gained after fall of their dictator should be heeded, Velayati said.

Denouncing aliens' interference in the region, he said UN should be regarded as a suitable lever to deal with such interferences.

The Islamic Republic of Iran and Iraq have a broad-based relation and the two nations have always moved forward shoulder to shoulder, he said.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has always backed oppressed nations in the region in their struggles against terrorist groups and played significant role in restoring stability to the region, Iraq and Syria, he said.

The UN envoy, for his part, said the Iraqi government and nation did their utmost to fight against terrorism and we believe that they themselves should take action towards a promising future.

Referring to the upcoming provincial elections in Iraq, he said all should be vigilant because these elections bring the country more stability.

Fortunately, regional countries are willing to have interaction with Baghdad and the UN secretary general mind establishment of sustainable peace, development and humanitarian activities for Iraqi people, he said.
