Iran renews support for Iraq's territorial integrity

FNA- Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Jaberi Ansari renewed Iran's support for territorial integrity and sovereignty of Iraq.

"There is a need to strengthen Iraq's central government and maintain its unity and territorial integrity," Jaberi Ansari said.

He reiterated that terrorism is the important problem of Iraq, region and the world, and said, "Iraq and its different political and social currents by common understanding on terrorism threats have reached to a gradual unity in confrontation against the ISIL terrorist group."

Kubis, for his part, explained the latest situation in Iraq and discussed challenges and opportunities in the country, fight against terrorism and establishment of stability as main priority for all Iraqi groups.

Addressing the UN Security Council on Thursday, Kubis said that military operations to liberate Iraq from the ISIL terrorist group will be coming to an end "in the rather short foreseeable future."

Kubis added that "the days of the so-called ISIL are counted," using one of the acronyms for the terrorist group.

He said progress and the government's successful campaign to retake the Eastern part of Mosul "should not conceal that fighting has been and will be a massive challenge, in particular inside the old city in Western Mosul".

Kubis said that after ISIL terrorists are routed, Iraq will need "substantial and sustainable" international support and assistance.

"Any abrupt scaling-down of engagement or support would mean repeating mistakes of the past," he said.
