Sputnik- The Trump administration has been approaching Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Jordan and Egypt through their diplomatic missions in Washington with proposals to form a US-backed defense pact which would share intelligence with Israel and counter Iran's influence in the region, according to media reports.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) US President Donald Trump's administration has floated the idea offorming an Israel-friendly anti-Iran Arab alliance onthe basis ofthe Saudi-led coalition intervening inYemen, local media reported Wednesday.

The administration has been approaching Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Jordan and Egypt throughtheir diplomatic missions inWashington withproposals toform a US-backed defense pact which would share intelligence withIsrael and counter Iran's influence inthe region, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing Arab diplomats fromthe embassies.

"Theyve been asking diplomatic missions inWashington if wed be willing tojoin this force that has an Israeli component Israels role would likely be intelligence sharing, not training or boots onthe ground. Theyd provide intelligence and targets. Thats what the Israelis are good at," a diplomat told the newspaper.

The Arab alliance would also be offered increased US military aid inreturn foragreeing toprotect each other incase ofexternal attack.

Cobbling together an Israeli-friendly coalition involving Gulf states could prove a difficult task asboth Saudi Arabia and the UAE do not have formal diplomatic relations withIsrael. Arab diplomats have reportedly asked forIsrael tostop its illegal settlement activities inthe occupied West Bank asa condition forcooperation underUS proposals.

The coalition would be formed byexpanding the ongoing Saudi-led intervention inthe Yemeni civil war, where Iran is said tobe backing the Shiite Houthi rebels. The United States pledged toincrease military aid tothe campaign aswell ashelp secure Red Sea shipping routes fromthe outfall ofthe war.

The coalition has turned downmaking comments onthe talks, ashas the US administration and Israel.

Yemen's civil war betweenthe internationally recognized Aden-based government and the Houthi movement backed byarmy units loyal toformer President Ali Abdullah Saleh erupted inMarch 2015. The Saudi-led coalition ofPersian Gulf countries began the same month and has sincebeen criticized forhitting civilians, causing disproportional child casualties and damaging vital non-military infrastructure. The coalition insists that it seeks tominimize civilian casualties.
