Russia, Iran agree on joint production of nuclear fuel

Sputnik- Russia and Iran have agreed a roadmap for joint production of nuclear fuel, Ali Akbar Salehi, the head of Irans Atomic Energy Organization (AEOI) said Saturday in an interview with a local news agency.





MOSCOW, February 25 (Sputnik) It took the countries overtwo years towork outthe agreement, Salehi added.
"Joint fuel production byRussia and Iran was one ofthe most useful topics that had been discussed duringnuclear talks [with Moscow] and eventually finalized. We said we needed Russias assistance inthis sphere," Salehi told ISNA.


The roadmap forcooperation was drafted byAEOI deputy chief Behrouz Kamalvandi duringhis visit toMoscow last January.

Moreover, Iran wants tobuy 950 tonnes ofconcentrated uranium ore, known asyellow cake, fromKazakhstan inthe next three years, Salehi said.

"Near[ly] 650 tons ofthe yellow cake shipment will arrive inTehran directly intwo batches ofshipment duringtwo years. The remaining 300 tons ofthis shipment will arrive inTehran overthe third year," Salehi said inan interview withISNA.

The head ofthe Atomic Energy Organization ofIran added that concentrate fromthe last shipment would be converted toURANIUM hexafluoride, a type ofgas used toenrich uranium, and sold back toKazakhstan.

The request is being reviewed bya committee that oversees the implementation ofthe Joint Comprehensive Plan ofAction (JCPOA). The deal was agreed byTehran and six world powers inJuly 2015 and saw Iran scale downits nuclear activities inexchange forsanctions relief.
