Sputnik- Iran wants to increase its defense tech cooperation with Russia, including the joint development of more anti-missile defense systems and fighter aircraft, Emad Abshenass of Iran Press told Sputnik.
On Thursday, Iranian army commander Major General Ataollah Salehi told Tasnim News that Iran has produced a missile defense system that is superior toRussia's S-300 long range surface-to-air missile, which Iran took delivery oflast year.
As well asdeveloping its own Bavar 373 surface-to-air missile system, Iran has recently taken delivery ofseveral Russian S-300 launch systems.
Russia had suspended the arms deal in2010 followingUN Security Council Resolution 1929, which banned the sale ofweapons toIran.
Iran responded bydeveloping a similar missile defense system and filing a complaint againstRussia withthe International Court ofArbitration inGeneva.
In April 2015, duringsuccessful negotiations betweenTehran and the 6+1 groups ofcountries regarding Iran's nuclear program, Russian President Vladimir Putin removed the embargo and Tehran withdrew the case fromarbitration last year afterRussia made the first delivery ofthe units.
On Saturday, Iran released a video showing the successful test ofits S-300 system.
Nevertheless, Tehran has continued withthe production ofits own missile defense system, the Bavar (Belief) 373, which has similar characteristics toRussia's S-300 system.
Last week, Iran's deputy defense minister Amir Khatami announced that Iran is carrying outtests ofthe Bavar 373, which was first unveiled last August.
Chief editor ofIran Press Emad Abshenass told Sputnik that Iran's development ofthe Bavar 373 does not preclude a desire toobtain more anti-missile systems fromRussia sinceTehran is keen todevelop varied and modern defense capabilities.
"Iran is interested inreceiving next-generation systems fromRussia, sinceit is very important forour country's armed forces tomodify and strengthen its air defense network withthe latest developments intechnology."
Abshenass said that Iran wants todevelop its own air defense systems incollaboration withRussia, including the purchase ofmore anti-missile systems and fighter aircraft.
"There is currently media information circulating that Iran, incooperation withRussia, is conducting or is planning toconduct the modernization ofits air defense inthe nearfuture, beginning with [adding]modern fighter jets tonew Russian missile defense systems and S-400 air defense systems," Abshenass said.
"Even if Iran is now building something ofits own that is more modern thanthe Russian systems supplied earlier, that doesn't mean that Iran won't buy Russian military systems. On the contrary, it retains an interest inusing Russian arms."
"Moreover, military and technological cooperation betweenIran and Russia is gaining momentum. Now Iran and Russia are actively negotiating forthe joint assembly and production ofsome models ofRussian weapons inIran. These might be modern models oftanks and combat aircraft," Abshenass said.
