Modern Iran meaningless if women being ignored: UN official

IRNA Director of the United Nations Information Center (UNIC) in Tehran Maria Dotsenko stressed on Saturday the importance of womens presence in societies, saying modern Iran will become meaningfull with womens role.

It is too difficult to think about modern Iran without womens role, Dotsenko said while addressing the opening ceremony on Irans Women, a photo exhibition in Tehran.

Irans Women is an exhibition that has been jointly organized by the Vice-Presidency for Women and Family Affairs and the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA). It displays 80 photos taken by IRNAs photojournalists for a week at Milad Tower in west of Tehran.

At the Saturday ceremony, the UN official expressed her pleasure over cooperating with the IRNA journalists, the female reporters in particular.

She further read out the message of the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres released on the occasion of the International Womens Day on March 8.

Womens rights are human rights. But in these troubled times, as our world becomes more unpredictable and chaotic, the rights of women and girls are being reduced, restricted and reversed.

Around the world, tradition, cultural values and religion are being misused to curtail womens rights, to entrench sexism and defend misogynistic practices, the UN chief has underlined in his message.
