Sputnik- Afghan militia members, fighting in Syria within the ranks of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) Fatemiyoun Brigade, will be given Iranian citizenship, Mohammad Ali Shahidi Mahallati, an official at Irans Foundation for Martyrs and Veterans Affairs, said, referring to the ruling of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) Mahallati's statement was released late onSunday onIranian conservative website Javanonline.
"According toKhameneis instructions, Iran will grant citizenship toAfghans fighting inSyria [as part ofthe Fatemiyoun Brigade]," Mahallati was quoted assaying bythe Turkish Anadolu news agency.
Since the beginning ofconflict inSyria in2011, Tehran, which supports Syrian President Bashar Assad, has sent thousands ofits Shiite militias tofight alongsideDamascus forces againstterrorists. Over 2,000 Iranian military personnel were killed duringsix years ofwar, Mahallati said last week, according toAnadolu.
In late January, the Human Rights Watch criticized Irans Revolutionary Guards Corps forrecruiting thousands ofundocumented Afghans tofight inSyria sinceNovember 2013.
