Iran calls on UN to end mission of special human rights rapporteur

FNA- Tehran blasted the UN Human Rights Council's politically-motivated and selective approach, and asked the world body to put an end to the mission of the special human rights rapporteur in Iran.

"Given the noticeable human rights progress made in the Islamic Republic of Iran and its extensive and constructive interactions with the international human rights mechanisms, it is now time to end the special rapporteur's mission in an appropriate way," Qaribabadi said, addressing the annual meeting of the UN Human Rights Council underway in Geneva.

He also warned that the UN Human Rights Council's selective and politically-tainted approach towards certain countries will make cooperation between the two sides difficult.

In relevant remarks on Sunday, Qaribabadi said his country will declare its official position on the recent report by Asma Jahangir, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights.

"The Iranian delegation will start its activities in the third week of the Human Rights Council's conference on Monday and the head of the delegation will explain and declare the Islamic Republic of Iran's positions on the recent report by Ms. Asma Jahangir, the Special Rapporteur on Human Rights situation in Iran, for the members of the Council," Qaribabadi said in Geneva.

The Iranian foreign ministry had last week deplored Jahangir's report as "unfair and politically-tainted", stressing that Tehran does not recognize it.

"As announced several times, the Islamic Republic of Iran does not recognize the report prepared by the special rapporteur who has been missioned based on a politically-tainted and selective resolution of certain countries," Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said on Thursday.

He added that Jahangir's report, like her predecessors' reports, has been prepared based on incorrect information and wrong prejudgments on the human rights situation in Iran.

"Unfortunately, the rapporteur has closed her eyes on several human rights progresses in Iran," Qassemi said.
