EL AVIV (Sputnik) Israeli President Reuven Rivlin called the US missile strike onan airfield inSyrias Homs province an "example tothe entire free world."


"The clear action byUS and @POTUS are a fitting response tosuch unthinkable brutality, & an example tothe entire free world," Rivlin said onTwitter.


Earlier inthe day, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel supported the US missile attack onthe airfield.

On Thursday night, the United States launched over50 Tomahawk cruise missiles atthe Syrian military airfield inAsh Shairat, located about40 kilometers (25 miles) fromthe city ofHoms. US President Donald Trump said the attack was a response tothe alleged chemical weapon use inSyria's Idlib onTuesday, which Washington blames onthe Syrian government.

On Tuesday, the Syrian National Coalition ofRevolutionary and Opposition Forces reported that a chemical weapon attack inSyrias Idlib province claimed the lives ofsome 80 people and inflicted harm onan additional 200 civilians. The coalition, aswell asa number ofWestern states, blamed the Syrian government troops forthe attack, while Damascus has refuted these allegations.

Following the 2013 chemical weapon attack ineastern Ghouta, Syria, an incident which killed upto 1,500 people, Syria joined the Convention onthe Prohibition ofChemical Weapons. In January 2016, the OPCW announced its completion ofthe chemical weapons disarmament inSyria. However, inJune 2016, the US State Department published a report which said Syria had continued touse chemical substances againstcitizens and suggested the country could also stockpile chemical weapons. After the report was released, UN High Representative forDisarmament Affairs Kim Won-soo said that UN and OPCW experts still could not confirm the complete destruction ofchemical weapon production facilities inSyria.
