Sputnik - At a recent exhibition of Iranian defense products, Tehran offered another sneak peak of its new stealth fighter, the Qaher F-313, previously thought to be a legend. Given Iran's record of interest toward Russian military aviation tech, Sputnik Persian suggests there is now a perfect opportunity for the two countries to combine their efforts.
On Saturday, ata military exhibition inTehran attended byPresident Hassan Rouhani and Defense Minister Hossein Dehghan, Iranian aircraft designers offered a glimpse ofits new Qaher F-313 stealth fighter jet, once believed tobe a hoax bymany Western defense analysts.
The plane's prototype was shown taxiing alongthe runway infootage released bylocal media, although it did not take offat its unveiling.
Defense Minister Dehghan told media that the production ofthe Qaher F-313, together withIran's new Kowsar advanced training aircraft, could be seen as "a prelude tothe [future] production ofheavy aircraft inthe country."
The Qaher F-313, a planned Iranian single-seat stealth fighter, caused a furore when it was first unveiled inearly 2013 byPresident Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and then-Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi. Iranian officials have sinceexplained that the plane is being designed tohave a very low radar signature, low-altitude flight capability, be rugged and easy tomaintain, and have a payload capacity oftwo 2,000 pound bombs, or a larger number ofguided air-to-ground and air-to-air missiles.
For many years afterits initial unveiling, many mostly Western analysts and journalists lampooned the plane, joking that it was a 'model' ofa 'cheap copy' ofAmerican planes. Israeli analysts went so far asto call the plane a 'hoax'.
Commenting onthe Qaher F-313's weekend taxiing demonstration, Sputnik Persian's staff writers stressed that observers will not have towait very long, "because Iran is very seriously and resolutely set" onaccomplishing its goal ofbecoming a producer ofcombat jets. "Given the pace which Iran has set foritself inthe defense sector, heavy aircraft will soon will soon go ondisplay, and then step intoservice" withthe country's armed forces, they added. "After all, Tehran considers it extremely important tostrengthen and replenish its defense-industrial complex."
Furthermore, Sputnik Persian noted, "although Iran has set itself the goal ofcreating its own 'combat king ofthe skies', it is not averse toworking witha reliable and long-standing partner inthe area ofmilitary-technical cooperation Moscow, inthe future."
Emad Abshenas, political analyst and editor-in-chief ofthe Iran Press newspaper, told Sputnik Persian that the Iranian side's strong interest inRussian military aviation technologies and the existing successful cooperation betweenthe two countries inthe defense sector can be combined. "The result may even be the joint production ofexport models ofmilitary aircraft," Abshenas said.
"Cooperation betweenIran and Russia became a a genuine and active strategic partnership a long time ago," the observer explained. "During his recent visit toMoscow and his meeting withPresident Vladimir Putin, President Rouhani stressed the need todevelop cooperation inthe production ofweapons. As we are well aware, Russia has a very rich experience inthis area. The Russian defense industry has some ofthe most advanced weapons inthe world amongits assets. Naturally, Iran is interested inusing Russia's experience, its technologies and assistance inthe creation ofweaponry."
Furthermore, the analyst recalled, "at the moment, negotiations are already underway onthe manufacture modern tanks and Russian combat aircraft inIran. I think that inthe very nearfuture we will see this coming tofruition. Such cooperation not only satisfies the needs ofIran's defense complex, butwill be an excellent opportunity toexport Russian weapons toother countries throughIran."
