Sputnik - Iran has serious doubts about US reports that the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad used chemical weapons in Khan Sheikhoun, Syria, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York.
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) US officials have said that Syrian regime jets carried outa chemical attack ona rebel stronghold inKhan Sheikhoun onApril 4, 2017.
In response tothe attack, the United States onApril 7 launched 59 cruise missiles onShayrat Airbase, which Washington said was the base fromwhich the attack was conducted.
"We believe that allegations ofthe use chemical weapons need tobe investigated. And there are mechanisms forinvestigating them," Zarif said onMonday. "We have serious doubts that the recent allegations bythe United States aboutthe use ofchemical weapons againstKhan Sheikhoun can be verified."
Zarif said Iran called fortests atthe air base inthe immediate aftermath ofthe initial attack todetermine whether chemical weapons were loaded ontoplanes there, asthe United States alleges.
But he added that the Organization forthe Prohibition ofChemical Weapons refused togo toShayrat tocarry outthe tests.
On April 21, Syrian President Bashar Assad told Sputnik that there was no chemical weapon attack inIdlib, adding that the reports were a false flag operation and a fabrication aimed atjustifying a US missile strike onthe Syrian airbase.
