Russia, Turkey sign documents on S-400 supplies - Erdogan



Sputnik News- Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday that Russia and Turkey have signed documents of S-400 air defense supplies.




The S-400 Triumph isRussia's next-generation mobile surface-to-air missile systemcarrying three different types ofmissiles capable ofdestroying aerial targets ata short-to-extremely-long range. It integrates a multifunctional radar, autonomous detection and targeting systems, anti-aircraft missile systems, launchers, and a command and control center.

On July 18, the head ofRussia's Rostec state corporation Sergei Chemezov said technical issues ofthe contract forthe supply oftheS-400 systemstoTurkey had been resolved, withonly administrative ones remaining.

As ofnow, Russia has concluded a contract forthe delivery ofthe S-400 systems withChina alone. Negotiations are also being conducted withIndia.

Earlier, US Department ofDefense spokesperson Capt. Jeff Davissaid ina briefingthat the United States wants NATO allies tohave interoperable equipment, and Turkey would need toexplain foritself the choice ofthe Russian S-400 air defense systems.

"Turkey is a NATO ally, and one ofthe cornerstone things that we liketo have withany ofour alliesis the ability tohave equipment that interoperates," Davis told reporters. "The reports ofthe S-400, and Turkey's purchase ofthat, Turkey would need toexplain that foritself."

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoganinhis turnsaid that he saw no reason forthe United States' concerns fromin connection withthe Ankara-Moscow talks onthe purchase ofRussian S-400 air defense systems.

"Why should this be a concern? Each country should take certain measures toensure its security. Which side can ensure these measures, there the steps are taken. How many times have we talked withAmerica, butit did not work out, so likeit or not, we began tomake plans aboutthe S-400. Our interested departments are negotiating, and this step will be taken," Erdogan said ata press conference inAnkara.
