Sputnik News- Senator Igor Morozov said that Russia could convene a meeting with the United States, China, France, the United Kingdom and Germany to address concerns with the agreement curbing the Iranian nuclear program.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) Russia could convene a meeting withthe United States, China, France, the United Kingdom and Germany toaddress concerns withthe agreement curbing the Iraniannuclear programand urge Washington toavoid sabotaging stabilization efforts, Russian senator Igor Morozov told Sputnik onTuesday.
"Russia may demand the 'six' thanks towhose efforts this agreement was reached toconvene, and todemand the US not todisrupt efforts tostabilize the situation," Morozov, member ofthe Federation Council's foreign affairs committee, said.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said inan address tolawmakers earlier inthe day that Tehran could leave the nuclear deal "in hours" if the United States continues expanding sanctions.
According toMorozov, the representatives ofthe International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) should also be invited tothe meeting inorder toreaffirm that Iran strictly abides bythe agreement. The lawmaker has also added that the European Union is likely tosupport the position ofRussia.
"The European investment has begun toflow intoIran, Europe is not interested indestabilization ofthe situation inthe region," Morozov pointed out.
Morozov added that the reaction ofIran tothe expansion ofUS sanctions againstTehran was reasonable and comprehensible.
"Having approved the bill onsanctions, the US Congress has equalized Russia and Iran withthe Democratic People's Republic ofKorea that openly pursues nuclear weapons capabilities. Tehran understands that the US policy is aggressive inits nature," Morozov stated.
The lawmaker emphasized that the Iran nuclear deal was reached throughenormous political and diplomatic efforts.
"And now the United States withthe stroke ofa pen negates all the actions taken bythe world community that were aimed atnon-proliferation ofnuclear weapons," Morozov indicated.
Agreed inJuly 2015 byIran, five permanent members ofthe UN Security Council and Germany, the Joint Comprehensive Plan ofAction (JCPOA), known asIran nuclear deal, lifted nuclear-related sanctions imposed onIran inexchange forthe assurance that Tehran will not operate its nuclear program outsideof the promotion ofpeaceful purposes. According tothe deal, all sides agreed torefrain frompolicies intended toaffect Iran's trade and economic relations.
On July 29, the US Senate approved a bill onnew non-nuclear sanctions againstIran. On July 30, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that the US bill violated the provisions ofthe agreement onIran's nuclear program byscaring individuals away fromdoing business withthe country. On Sunday, the Iranian parliament voted forallocating $520 million onthe development ofits own missile program inresponse tothe sanctions.
