Sputnik News- Russian and Iranian joint railroad projects benefit virtually all of Europe and Asia, according to the chief of the Iran Railways international affairs department.
Abbas Nazari, head ofthe Islamic Republic ofIran Railways foreign affairs department, told Sputnik Persian that the cooperation betweenRussia and Iran onan intercontinental railway project is "profitable not just forboth countries, butalso forAsian and European states."
"Russia is a prominent railway power; it has an extensive network ofrailways which accounts for85 percent ofall freight transported bythe country. An important element ofour cooperation is the North-South transport corridor which, asyou know, begins inEurope and runs toIndia viaRussia, Azerbaijan and Iran. We seek toensure that Iranian railways become the primary transit element ofthe North-South Transport Corridor," he said, adding that the length ofthe Iranian segment ofthe corridor is about2,000 kilometers.
Nazari pointed outthat Russia and Iran need each other tomove their freight betweenEurope and Asia, and that Tehran enjoys an unprecedented level oftechnological cooperation withMoscow.
He also said that Iran also cooperates withRussia onseveral other important railway-related ventures, likethe joint manufacturing ofrailroad carriages and the upcoming electrification ofthe 600-kilometer segment o ofthe Garmsar Inche Burun railway, aswell ason other large-scale infrastructure projects.
"Were working together withRussia ondeveloping the biggest docking area inIran the Shahid Rajaee port. The ongoing negotiations cover all aspects ofthis undertaking: the port itself, the access railways and the special economic zone. Once all these matters are settled, the developing process will begin inearnest," Nazari explained.
The International NorthSouth Transport Corridor is a 7,200-kilometer interconnecting network ofrailways, roads and shipping lanes designed tofacilitate the flow offreight betweenIndia, Iran, Russia, Azerbaijan, aswell asEuropean and Central Asian states.
