Sputnik - Iran reportedly intends to construct a 450 MW power plant in Syria's Latakia. The energy officials of both countries have signed a corresponding deal in Tehran.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) Iran and Syria have signed a memorandum ofunderstanding (MoU) oncooperation inthe electricity sector, providing forthe construction ofa power station inSyria's Latakia province, SANA news agency reported Tuesday.
The total capacity ofthe future power generation station will be 450 MW.
The memorandum also involves the establishment offive gas turbines, each witha capacity of125 MW, inBaniyas, the assessment ofthe state ofthe thermal power plant inAleppo, and the restoration oftwo power stations inthe Deir ez-Zor and Homs provinces.
The deal was signed inTehran bySyrian Electricity Minister Mohammad Zuhair Kharboutli and Irans Deputy Minister ofEnergy Sattar Mahmoudi.
Iran has expressed its readiness totake part inthe reconstruction ofthe Syrian electricity sector, which has been considerably damaged overthe last several years.
Syria has been inthe state ofcivil war forover six years, withgovernment forces fighting againstboth Syrian opposition groups who strive tooverthrow President Bashar Assad, and numerous extremist and terrorist groups such asthe Daesh (ISIS) and Jabhat Fatah al Sham (al-Nusra Front), both ofwhich are banned inRussia.
The restoration ofinfrastructure inSyria became possible afterthe liberation ofmajor militant strongholds, including Aleppo, and the most recent lifting ofthesiege ofDeir ez-Zor asa result ofmilitary effortstaken bythe Syrian army and its allies.
In August, Iran's Chamber ofCommerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture expressed its willingness tohelp the development ofSyria's businesses, aswell asto assist Damascus inthe implementation ofits reconstruction initiatives acrossthe country.
