Iranian FM Zarif reveals what could be US 'Priority' Goal in Syria



Sputnik News- While the Iranian government is interested in settling the Syrian crisis, Washington is pursuing the opposite, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said in New York on Wednesday.



"Today it seems tome that priorities have changed and forthe government ofthe US it is more important toprevent the Syrian government fromtaking overthe border withIraq thanit is todefeat ISIS [Daesh]," Zarif said inan interview withthe Asia Society, a non-profit based inNew York.


The minister underscored that Tehran is interested inending the conflict inSyria. At the same time, according tohim, the settlement ofthecrisisis not the priority goal forWashington.

As forIran's involvement inSyria, it is aimed not atsupporting any ofthe groups, butat "fighting terrorism," Zarif stressed.

The Iranian government has repeatedly accused the US ofsupporting militant groups inSyria, including Daesh and al-Nusra Front. In April, Iranian PresidentHassan Rouhaniaccused Washington ofhelping terrorists afterUS missile strikes ona Syrian airbase, saying that "terrorists are celebrating" the attack.

In turn, the White House has criticized Irans policy. During his visit toSaudi Arabia inMay,President Donald Trumpaccused the Iranian government ofbeing a dictatorship and a sponsor ofterrorism, saying that Tehran has "fueled the fires ofsectarian conflict and terror" inthe Middle East.
