Sputnik - Saudi Arabia praises a hardline policy of Donald Trump toward Iran as relations between Teheran and Riyadh have been strained for a long time. The Sunni-led kingdom considers Shia Iran to be its main rival in the Middle East.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) Saudi King Salman bin Adulaziz Al Saud held a telephone conversation withUS President Donald Trump and welcomed Washingtons policy towardTehran, praising the role ofUS administration, local media reported Sunday.
According toAl Arabiya channel,King Salmanalso noted that the US administration recognizes the challenges and threats coming fromIran, and stressed the need forunited actions againstterrorism, calling Iran its main sponsor.
Trump, inhis turn, thanked King Salman forhis support and stressed that the United States was ready towork together withits allies toachieve peace and security inthe world, the media added.
The two leaders also discussed bilateral relations and their development, according tothe channel.
On Friday, US President Donald Trump announced that the US administration haddecided not tocertify Irans compliance withthe Joint Comprehensive Plan ofAction (JCPOA), also known asthe Iran nuclear deal, ordering the US Department ofTreasury toimpose new sanctions onIran's Revolutionary Guard Corps and four other entities. Trump, however, had not challenged Iran's compliance withthe deal atthe international level.
