UN Coordinator condoles death of hundreds in western Iran quake

IRNA - UN Resident Coordinator in Iran Gary Lewis in a message extended condolences over the deadly earthquake in western Iran which resulted in killing hundreds of people and injuring thousands of others.


Conveying sincere condolences to Government and People of Iran following last night's deadly earthquake on western border. Situation was unclear around midnight, now, as the sun rises this morning, we know more about the number of dead / injured. UN will assist if requested,' Lewis said in his Twitter message which was released on Monday.

In a separate Twitter message, he reiterated international community's readiness to support quake-stricken people, saying, 'Currently meeting with Iranian national / Tehran authorities to review current disaster situation re EQ [earthquake] on Iran / Iraq border. Considering options for support to Iran if needed. Members of the international diplomatic community also present in support.'

The 7.3-magnitude earthquake in Kermanshah Province, western Iran has so far claimed the lives of 207 people and injured 2,500.
