Iran, Russia top diplomats confer Syria developments in Sochi

IRNA Top Iranian and Russian diplomats conferred on latest developments in Syria in the black sea resort of Sochi.

Iranian Foreign Minister's Special Assistant for Political Affairs Hossein Jaberi Ansari and Russian President's Special Envoy on Syria Alexander Lavrentiev discussed the Syrian Congress of National Dialogue during their meeting on Monday.

Jaberi Ansari is expected to attend the trilateral meeting of Astana process guarantor states on Monday evening.

He is scheduled to attend the Syrian Congress of National Dialogue on Tuesday.

Iranian foreign minister's special assistant for political affairs arrived in the Russian resort city of Sochi on Monday to attend the Syrian Congress of National Dialogue and confer with Russian and Syrian officials on the sidelines of the conference.

The Syrian Congress of National Dialogue is slated for January 29-30 in Russia's Sochi.

The first delegations of the Syrian Congress of the National Dialogue comprising 175 members arrived in Russia's Black Sea resort city of Sochi on Monday morning.

According to Russia TV, members of 'the Path to Peaceful Change' party, Syrian National Youth Party, General Federation of Trade Unions of Syria, Arab Socialist Movement and Syrian Democratic Forces also arrived in Sochi.

Most of the Syrian opposition groups will arrive in Sochi on Monday, Russian TV reported.

A delegation from the United Nations, to be headed by Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura, will also enter Sochi today.

Russian foreign minister has invited about 1,600 people from the Syrian parties to attend the event which was initiated by Iran, Russia and Turkey.

Iran, Russia and Turkey, three peace guarantors in Syria, reached an agreement in late 2017 on holding the Syrian Congress of National Dialogue in Sochi.

Since March 2011, Syria has been suffering from unrest and terrorist acts. Several rounds of talks have been held on Syria in Astana, Kazakhstan, since January 2017.

Iran, Russia and Turkey are the initiators of ceasefire in Syria.
