Syrian army wrests control over Eastren Ghouta

February 25, The Iran Project - The Syrian army has launched a ground operation against the al-Nusra Front and other terrorist groups in the Eastren Ghouta region on Sunday (Feb. 25), wresting control over some areas.

According to Iran's Arabic-language Al-Alam news channel, the Nashabeya and Hazrma areas as well as Farzat Hill by the Syrian military were recaptured on Sunday.

It also said that Syrian army soldiers had advanced in al-Zariqiya as terrorists fled the region.

The fresh campaign is aimed at gaining control of the neighborhoods occupied by the Takfiri terrorists in the suburbs of the capital Damascus.

Humanitarian Ceasefire

After several days of tense behind-the-scenes negotiations, the UN Security Council has unanimously adopted a resolution proposing a 30-day humanitarian ceasefire in Syria, RT wrote.

The proposal came amid escalating violence in East Ghouta, a suburb of Damascus, which has seen a new wave of clashes between Syrian government forces and both rebel and Islamist factions, including Al-Nusra Front, currently known as Jabhat Fateh Al-Sham.

The UN Security Council was to vote on the document on Friday, but the 15-member body faced intense diplomatic negotiations, with the Russian delegation seeking amendments to the document. Moscow argued that the initial text was utopian as the US-led coalition in Syria does not provide any guarantees that militants controlling the area would observe the ceasefire.

The Russian side has also stressed that the real goal of the document was to pin the blame for the escalation of violence on the Syrian government and potentially prepare the ground for regime change.

Civilians as Human Shields

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the root of the problems in the Eastern Ghouta is the presence of Jabhat al-Nusra use civilians as human shields and claim that humanitarian conditions are bad there.

On Friday (Feb. 23), in a press conference with his Uzbek counterpart Abdulaziz Kamilov, Lavrov underscored that the terrorists use civilians in Eastern Ghouta as human shields in order to put the blame for any casualties on the Syrian Army and government and present them as parties that violate international humanitarian laws, adding that whoever wants to ensure the human rights of the civilians in Eastern Ghouta should put pressure on the terrorist organizations that exist there.

The Russian minister said that the US-led international coalition doesnt seem to fight Jabhat al-Nusra terrorist organization in Syria, noting that Al-Nusra is not being targeted. We still have no evidence that the US-led coalition considers the Nusra as a target for its military campaign.

Lavrov also noted that the so called White Helmets have repeatedly been caught falsifying information, MNA wrote.
