Iran FM, Pakistan Army Chief discuss bilateral ties, regional security

IRNA - Foreign Minister of Iran Mohammad Javad Zarif on Tuesday met with Pakistan Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa and discussed matters of mutual interest, regional security, a military statement said on Tuesday.

The visiting dignitary appreciated bilateral security engagements during the recent months and measures initiated by both sides to improve Pak-Iran border security, read the statement issued by the military's media wing Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR).

It said that regional peace is dependent upon wider cooperation within West Asia. 'We all need to cooperate to root out transnational security/ crimes threat.'

General Bajwa visited Iran in November last year and met with Iranian leaders to further enhance coordination between the two countries especially in defense sector.

Zarif heading a politico-economic delegation is on a three-day official visit to the country on the invitation of his Pakistani counterpart Khwaja Asif.

During his stay in Islamabad, Zarif has discussed bilateral ties and issues of mutual interest with the top-ranking Pakistani officials including prime minister, parliament speaker, foreign minister and national security adviser.

This is Zarifs seventh visit to Pakistan since he became the 11th governments foreign minister in 2013.
