Israel: US', allies' missile strikes have 'enforced red line' in Syria

Sputnik - Early on Saturday, the US, the UK and France fired more than 100 missiles from ships and manned aircraft at Syria in response to an alleged chemical attack in the city of Douma blamed on Damascus.

"Last year, President Trump made clear that the use ofchemical weapons crosses a red line. Tonight, underAmerican leadership, the United States, France and the United Kingdom enforced that line," an Israeli official told Reuters oncondition ofanonymity.

He stressed that missile strikes atSyria are "justified."

The official went onsaying that Syria's "murderous actions" jeopardise the country's territory, forces and leadership.

Earlier inthe day, the United States, the United Kingdom and France launched a massive missile strike attargets inSyria inresponse toan alleged chemical incident inDouma inEastern Ghouta, which has been blamed onDamascus despitethe fact that the OPCW probe is only due tostart today. According tothe Russian Defense Ministry, a total of100 cruise and air-to-surface missiles were launched fromtwo US warships atthe Red Sea, aswell asfrom tactical aviation overthe Mediterranean and B-1B bombers fromal-Tanf area. The Russian Defense Ministry says that most missiles launched bythe Western states onSyria had been repelled bythe Arab Republic's air defense complexes.Relations betweenIsrael and Syria have been strained overthe pasttime, withIsraeli military conducting attacks onthe Syrian territory. The latest occurred onApril 9, when two F-15 jets ofthe Israeli Air Force had conducted a strike againstthe T-4 military facility inthe east ofHoms province fromLebanese airspace, according tothe Russian Defense Ministry. In response tothe assault, the Syrian Foreign Ministry said that Israeli attack constituted "an indirect response tothe success ofthe Syrian Arab Army ineliminating armed terrorist groups fromthe Damascus suburbs and other Syrian areas."

The Israeli attack came inthe wake ofthe US and the EU accusations that the Syrian government is using chemical weapons inDouma, Eastern Ghouta, aftermedia reported, citing sources amongmilitants, aboutan alleged chlorine gas attack that, supposedly, killed dozens ofcivilians. Damascus strongly denied the claims, saying that it had warned that militants inthe area had been preparing a provocation, involving chemical weapons' use.
