Twice Oscar-winning director Farhadi to hold masterclass in Portugal

Iran Daily - The two-time Academy Award winner Asghar Farhadi will hold masterclass at the Training Ground section of the New Directors/New Films Festival.


New Directors/New Films Festival is a unique gathering and celebration of emerging filmmakers. This annual event in a beach resort of Espinho is the most vibrant film festival in Portugal, focused on the discovery of new talents worldwide.

Training Ground hosts more than 30 masterclasses and 10 workshops during the festival where the participants emerging filmmakers, film students, film enthusiasts from all over the world experience first-class training through workshops and masterclasses lectured by some of the film industrys top experts with highly acknowledged achievements. Beside learning from the experts, participants are able to share their experience and widen their contacts with other trainees in a relaxed but energetic environment. The Training Ground section is going to be held on June 19-24.

Writing, producing and directing most of his films, Farhadi has been nominated for over 100 awards in festivals all over the world and has won over 60 awards inside and outside Iran.

Definitely one of the foremost filmmakers in international cinema of the moment, who is known for how his dramas examine ethical problems and contradictions arising from social class, gender, and religion in modern Iran.

Farhadi won his first Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year in 2012, with A Separation, becoming the first Iranian filmmaker to ever win an Academy Award and also being nominated for Best Writing, Original Screenplay.

Five years later, in 2017, his film The Salesman earned Iran the Best Foreign Language Film of the Year award once more and earned Asghar the Best Screenwriter prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

His latest work, Everybody Knows (2018), shot in Spain and in Spanish with a cast led by Javier Bardem and Penlope Cruz, premiered at this years edition of Cannes Film Festival as the opening screening and received great reviews.
