May 29, The Iran Project - Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif left Tehran for the Indian capital of New Delhi late on Sunday (May 27) to exchange views with the senior Indian officials on the latest regional and international developments.

Zarif's trip to New Delhi features talks with his Indian counterpart, Sushma Swaraj.

Upon his arrival at New Delhi airport, he said Iran has good relations with India and the two sides have so far held regular talks.

Referring to his recent meeting with Indian foreign minister in Iran, he said, "Due to US act of withdrawing from Iran deal, we need to have more consultations with New Delhi these days."

After a meeting with his Indian counterpart, Swaraj, Zarif noted that India does not recognize unilateral sanctions as its foreign minister has announced and the two sides are determined to boost ties in all fields.

The Iranian foreign minister stated that during his long meeting with Swaraj, they have reviewed various issues such as implementation of joint oil projects, direct trade interaction between the two countries, currency exchanges and using national currencies, cooperation in railway sector, North-South corridor and transit between the two countries.

�He said that it was also agreed to set up committees for banking and trade cooperation between the two sides.

FM Zarif added that they have had good talks there, indicating the international community�s interest in vigorously preserving the Iran nuclear deal in the face of the US pullout and reinstatement of sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

In a meantime, Zarif in a message lauded his one day visit to India.

�Fruitful visit to #India, building on achievements of President Rouhani's state visit in Feb. Productive meetings on energy, banking, transportation and commerce, Zarif wrote on his Twitter account.

Meanwhile, Iran envoy to the UK Hamid Baeidinejad in a message referred to recent meeting between Iran and India saying India is eager to work closely with Iran.

"India joins #JCPOA Parties to oppose the application of US sanctions. In addition to current oil imports, India intends to import gas and is working closely with Iran to develop the Chabahar port which can boost trade between the two countries,� Baeidinejad wrote on his Twitter page.

Also, Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman Raveesh Kumar in a message hailed relations between Iran and India as unique.

�EAM @SushmaSwaraj [Indian Foreign Minister] welcomes Foreign Minister of #Iran Mohammad JavadZarif�in New Delhi ahead of the delegation-level talks,� Raveesh Kumar wrote on his Twitter account.

�Our relations with Iran are unique and historical and we attach great importance to this relationship,� he added.

Eventually, Zarif ended his one-day official visit to New Deli and left for Tehran late Monday.

India was first non-JCPOA destination for Zarif after US withdrawal from the international pact on May 8.
