Iran might start building nuclear reactor in Arak in 2-3 months - Reports

Sputnik- Tehran has completed the planning stage of a project for a new nuclear reactor in Arak and could proceed with construction in 2-3 months, Tasnim News Agency reported, citing representative of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization Behrouz Kamalundi.

"In accordance withthe planned schedule, we have completed the last stage ofthe preparatory phase and sent the results tothe Chinese side. After agreeing withthem within2-3 months we shall begin the construction stage ofthe reactor," Kamalundi said asquoted bythe agency. The official went onto say that inthe event Tehran abandons the Iran nuclear deal, formally known asthe Joint Comprehensive Plan ofAction (JCPOA), it will be able torebuild the reactor inArak.

Kamalundi also added that the cancellation ofthe nuclear deal will give Iran the opportunity toenrich uranium atits factories inNatanz and Fordo.
"Now there are aboutsix thousand centrifuges inNatanz. At the Fordo plant, enrichment is not being carried out, butin the event ofIran's withdrawal fromthe nuclear deal and the relevant decision ofthe management, we will again launch the uranium-processing plant atFordo," he said.

However, he stressed that Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had ordered compliance withthe terms ofthe JCPOA.

The Arak Nuclear Complex consists ofa heavy water experimental reactor and a heavy water production plant. In accordance withthe JCPOA, Iran had torebuild the nuclear facility inArak tosatisfy concerns overthe possible producing and reprocessing ofweapons-grade plutonium. In accordance withthe JCPOA, Iran filled the reactor's core withcement torender it inoperable. The redesigned plant is being used forpeaceful nuclear research inmedical and industrial spheres. Under the nuclear deal, Iran has also pledged toredesign the uranium enrichment facility inFordo so asto make it a nuclear and technological research center.

Iran's possible move tolaunch its heavy water reactor is connected withthe uncertainty overthe fate ofthe nuclear deal. On May 8, US President Donald Trump announced Washington's withdrawal fromthe JCPOA. The nuclear deal confined Tehran's nuclear program inexchange forthe lifting ofthe UN's nuclear sanctions aswell asrestrictive measures introduced bythe US and the EU. Trump vowed not only toreimpose sanctions butto introduce new ones.
