India to open Chabahar Port by 2019 despite US sanctions on Iran



Sputnik - Participation in the development of Chabahar Port will provide India with an alternative and reliable access route into Afghanistan, utilizing Indias earlier investment in Afghanistans Zaranj-Delaram road, and also yield a more direct sea-road access route into the Central Asian Region.




New Delhi (Sputnik):Despite renewed US sanctions onIran, India is making every effort tomake the strategic Chabahar port inSouth-eastern Iran onthe Gulf ofOman operational; this would make the CIS more accessible toIndia. Nitin Gadkari, India's Minister forShipping, announced onFriday that the government aims tooperationalize the Iranian port, inwhich it has made heavy investments, bythe year 2019.
"India is trying tomake Chabahar Port inIran operational by2019The opening upof the Chabahar Port would make the CIS countries more accessible,"India's Minister forShipping Nitin Gadkari saidwhile addressing the Indian Diaspora inDushanbe onFriday.


The Indian-backed Chabahar port complex inIran will provide India much-needed access tolandlocked, mineral-rich Afghanistan, opening avenues fortrade worth millions ofdollars. Presently, India's bilateral trade withCIS countries and Afghanistan is solely dependent onthe route that crosses throughPakistan, and thereby subject tothe fortune ofoften-hostile relations betweenDelhi and Islamabad.
"Chabahar Port has the potential tobecome a regional transit hub forAfghanistan and eastern Central Asian Countries. It is expected that the volume oftrade will increase substantially followingthe commencement ofoperations atShahid Beheshti Chabahar Port,"India's ministry ofshipping stated ina press release.


India has chosen an Iranian company, Kaveh Port and Marine Services, torun the Chabahar port for18 months foran interim period starting June 13.

The Indian government has also eased the rules forIndian companies hoping tomanage, operate and maintain the containers and multi-purpose terminals atthe Chabahar port forthe next ten years.

India and Iran have already been discussing strategies towithstand US sanctions. In the last week ofMay, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj sat fortalks inNew Delhi onthis issue and discussed various options, including Rupee-Rial trade, so that bilateral trade betweenthe two countries could continue withouta blip.

India Ports Global Private Ltd and Iran's Arya Banader had signed a commercial contract forthe development and operation ofChabahar Port inMay 2016. As per the contract, India is constructing two terminals (five berths) atChabahar Port withan investment of $85 million forprocurement ofport equipment. Additionally, India is providing Iran a $150 million loan throughthe Export-Import Bank ofIndia (EXIM Bank) forthe development ofChabahar Port.
