Elements behind Tehran bazaar chaos arrested: Prosecutor

Tasnim A number of people who incited turmoil in downtown Tehran and forced the closure of the grand bazaar on Monday have been arrested, the prosecutor general of Tehran said.

In comments on the sidelines of a judicial conference on Tuesday, Abbas Jafari Dowlatabadi said those arrested for the Mondays disorderly conduct in Tehran and closure of the grand bazaar are not among shop owners or merchants.

The prosecutor general said the detainees would remain in custody until trial.

On Monday, Jafari Dowlatabadi said the US is plotting to provoke unrest and civil disobedience in Iran through economic pressures against the country.

It came after protesters in Tehran swarmed the grand bazaar on Monday and forced shopkeepers to close their stalls, months after similar demonstrations rocked the country.

The protests erupted after the Iranian rial dropped to around 100,000 to the US dollar on the country's black market, despite government attempts to control the currency rate.
