165 tremors shake western Iran in 16 hours

IRNA Some 165 aftershocks were registered in Irans western Province of Kermanshah almost within 16 hours after it was hit by a 5.9-magnitude earthquake, a local official said on Monday.


The aftershocks occurred since the major earthquake rocked Kermanshah Sunday at 2:37 pm local time until 6:30 am Monday, said Farhad Norouzi, head of Kermanshah's seismographic center.

Speaking to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), he said two out of the total aftershocks were of magnitudes above four. He added that some 3,649 tremors have jolted the province since a fatal 7.3-magnitude earthquake hit the local city of Ezgeleh last November, killing 620 and injuring more than 12,000 people.

The official said that the epicenter of all Monday morning aftershocks were the provincial capital city of Kermanshah.

Sunday's 5.9-magnitude earthquake damaged 951 buildings in towns and villages in western Kermanshah, and injured 287 people.

Iran is located on a number of major geological fault lines and has been shaken by strong quakes in the past decades.
