Deputy Minister: Iran expects Pakistan to tighten control at common borders

FNA - Iranian Deputy Interior Minister for Security and Law Enforcement Affairs Hossein Zolfaqari underlined his country's call on Pakistan to block cross border attacks by terrorist groups against Iran.

"Given the good relations between the two countries, we have clearly declared that the Iranian people and the Islamic Republic's officials expect that the Pakistani officials act more seriously in this regard" and prevent the terrorist grouplets' activities at the borders, Zolfaqari said on Sunday.

He stressed that Iran has never allowed any terrorist moves against Pakistan from its bordering areas, and said Tehran has demanded Islamabad not to allow members of terrorist groups to freely traffic on Pakistan's soil to attack Iran.

"Iran is entitled to the right to expect this," Zolfaqari said.

Iran and Pakistan in a statement in July underlined the necessity for strengthening cooperation to fight against terrorist groups, specially the ISIL, noting that they would not allow foreigners to use their bases as a platform to launch military attacks against each other.

The joint statement was issued at the end of a visit by Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri to Islamabad after his meeting with Chief of Army Staff of the Pakistan Army General Qamar Javed Bajwa.

"The two countries reached a comprehensive military framework for mutual cooperation in the security field, fighting against terrorism and exchange of information," the statement said.

"The two sides agreed to hold continued and multi-stage talks and have joint operational and tactical cooperation to develop the security atmosphere over the regions near the Iranian and Pakistani borders," it added.

"The two sides will not allow their territories to be used for aggression against territories of each other," the statement underscored.

The Iranian and Pakistani officials also emphasized their commitment to improve peace and stability in the region, specially through their confrontation against transnational terrorists like the ISIL.
