Iran sees no point to Rouhani-Trump summit after US withdrawal from JCPOA

Sputnik Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said that he saw no point in a meeting between Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his US counterpart Donald Trump after the latters decision to leave the Iranian nuclear deal.

"Not, when the previous huge progress that we made was thrown out That [previous deal] was forus the litmus test ofwhether we can trust the United States or not," Zarif told the CNN broadcaster answering the question whether Rouhani should meet withTrump.

The Iranian foreign minister pointed outthat it would depend onTrump whether Iran would be ready tosign the new deal withthe United States.

"It depends onPresident Trump whether he wants tomake us believe that he is a reliable partner Now if we spend time withhim and he signs another agreement How long will it last? Until the end ofhis administration? Until he departs fromthe place where he put his signature onthe agreement?" Zarif said.

He pointed outthat years offoreign economic pressure made Iranian people resistant tosanctions, which underany circumstances will hurt the Iranian economy.
"US sanctions have always hurt What it's hurting, though, is people who want tobuy medicine. People who want tobuy food," Zarif added.

The second wave ofUS reinstated sanctions, that will hurt the oil and gas industry inIran and its energy sector, aswell asthe transactions withthe Central Bank ofIran, is slated forNovember.

In May, Trump announced that the United States would withdraw fromthe Iran nuclear deal, known formally asthe Joint Comprehensive Plan ofAction (JCPOA). In addition, Trump announced that the United States would be reinstating sanctions onIran, previously lifted underthe JCPOA inexchange forTehran maintaining a peaceful nuclear program. This unilateral move has been opposed byother signatories ofthe JCPOA.
